These elements were inspired by a visit to the town of Cave-in-Rock, Illinois, not long before I started this painting. The Ohio River had washed away much of the soil, exposing several feet of all the trees’ roots. I used this as a vehicle to enable me to entwine the two trees at their bases. Likewise the rubble pile is similar to one found in the river bed.
